Jim Dobbas, Inc. (JDI) is a heavy equipment contracting company specializing in the railroad industry. Founded by James B. Dobbas in 1964, JDI began as a trucking company and has broadened its services and expertise in the railroad industry in the years since its inception. The company now specializes in train derailment and emergency response services for the Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Companies.
JDI’s current President, Don Dobbas, is the son of the original founder and has worked for the company since his teens. Having washed trucks for the company during high school, Don joined JDI full time immediately following graduation. During his 30+ years with the company, Don has worked in all aspects of the business including running equipment, driving trucks and overseeing projects. Don is now responsible for the overall operations of the company which employs 45 people.
One of the more notable examples of JDI’s work in recent years was the rebuilding of a Union Pacific Bridge crossing the American River after it was set on fire. The bridge was a main throughway for approximately 50 trains per day. The destruction of the bridge meant that trains were diverted 90 miles before they could continue on their original route. Needless to say, repairing the bridge was an immediate priority for Union Pacific. JDI was hired to rebuild the bridge which they completed in a record 12 days. Headquartered in Antelope, JDI services the railroad industry in Northern California, Central California, Northern Nevada and Southern Oregon. Whenever you hear about a derailment, mudslide, washout or fire affecting freight trains in the region, JDI is probably on its way to assist with the situation and get the trains back on track.
